The University of Wisconsin-Madison,
through its Spooner Agricultural Research Station is the only research
institution in North America to do applied research work on dairy sheep.
The dairy sheep program started with the constitution of a dairy sheep
flock in 1993 and the construction of a milking parlor in 1995. The station
has 300 ewes of different breeds and is a proud member of the Wisconsin
Sheep Dairy Cooperative. The Station is dedicated in helping the small
dairy sheep industry in North America by developing a dairy breed of sheep
adapted to the environment, developing sound and sustainable management
systems that can be applied by all producers and by providing as much information
as possible through publication and educational events such as the annual
Spooner Sheep Day and the annual Great Lakes Dairy Sheep Symposium. Visit
